Chasing Castles in southern Germany

Right now I’m on a business trip to Germany, and because there are no good hotels near the company I work in, I have access to a rental car. As soon as the weekend rolled around, me and my colleague made full use of this.

When we got up on Saturday the sky was grey and it was drizzling; not great for sightseeing but we set off anyway, hoping it would clear up during the day. We drove for about an hour and a half through sleepy little towns in the German countryside until we got to Hohentwiel fortress ruin … Read the rest

Lazy last day in Matsu

There are a few more islands that belong to the Matsu archipelago but we never managed to arrange a good schedule for going there. However we still had a day left and had already seen most of the two main islands so we decided to take it easy. We slept till fairly late in the morning then went out and rode around leisurely checking various minor tourist attractions.

Eventually … Read the rest

Nangan island, bunkers tunnels and more bunkers.

Whe we woke up this morning the rain had stopped but the sky was still grey. That didn’t matter to us since the goal of the day was to see several of the underground bunkers and tunnels that are no longer in use by the military. The first one was tunnel 88 which used to be for tanks but now acts as a storage place for the local wine. My camera doesn’t capture smells but if it did you could get a whiff of the rather strong wine odor in there.

We thought the wine tunnel would take a bit more … Read the rest

Beigan island: mountains sea and bunkers.

We woke up pretty early this morning and after a quick breakfast on the terrace overlooking the ocean we went for a stroll in the little village where we slept. I really felt like somewhere in Southern Europe, with old style stone houses climbing the cliffs just above the water.

After walking around for a little while we got on the scooter and drove to the War and Peace Memorial Park. Unlike most other military installations on the island there are some here you can get into … Read the rest

Birthday trip to Matsu

Because my wife is awesome, she gave me a trip to the island of Matsu for my birthday. So this morning we took off to the airport for a four day trip. When we got to the airport we learned that the flight was delayed so we ended up waiting for around an hour. We finally got in the air but about half an hour after take off the captain let us know they had some mechanical problems and we had to turn around and go back. Except for a bit of turbulence on the way down everything went well. … Read the rest

Photo post from southern Germany

For the last two months I have been on a business trip in southern Germany and Switzerland. I am finally back in Taiwan and I felt i should make a small post about it. Naturally I spent most of the time working but I had some chances to go travel in the area during the weekends. The places I went to were mostly just small German or Swiss towns and there’s really not much to tell expect showing the photos.

The last day in Iceland

Today is our last whole day in Iceland, we leave early tomorrow morning. We drove out of Stykkisholmur in the rain but missed our turning point. While looking for a suitable place to make a U-turn it cleared up a bit so we decided to make one last sightseeing stop on Snaefellness.

It was a quick stop so only one photo, apparently this mountain is becoming a bit of a symbol for Iceland, though I forgot the name.

From there we headed back, found the turning point this time and drove into Reykjavik. We checked in to our hotel, had … Read the rest

Snaefellness in the rain

Today has been somewhat disappointing. The plan was to see as much as we could of Snaefellness peninsula but it has been raining heavily all day and even when it cleared up for a while, everything was so shrouded in mist we couldn’t see much.

In order to stay out of the rain for a bit we started by going to the Shark Museum in Bjarnarhofn, a small place that showcases the history of fishing for Greenland Shark and the process of fermenting it to be able to eat it. The reason the meat has to be fermented is because … Read the rest

Arrival on Sneafellness peninsula

Today has been yet another driving day, we left our little guest house quite early, and drove westward through gently rolling hills of green pastures. Since we had time we made a detour out to a sightseeing spot called Borgarvik, an old kind of fortification on a cliff top, and not far from there, a strange cliff formation in the sea.

We made a quick stop for lunch then drove on for … Read the rest

To the west

Today has been another driving day. We left Lake Myvatn in the morning, heading westward making a couple of stops along the way. The first stop was Godafoss or God’s Waterfall in English; the name is quite appropriate, but it also makes me wonder, if this is what a relatively unknown place on Iceland has to offer, how mighty is not something like the Niagara falls.

We drove on through very gently sloping fields and pastures, a fjord a little way off and as always mountains in … Read the rest
