Östlibacken 10:07 am

The lateness of the winter sunrise means that even I am able to witness its glory. Where the valley opens up in the east, the dawn has broken through the ash grey clouds overhead with gusto and vibrance. Left is only pale blue sky tinted yellow at the edges of the mountains and a few torn cloud rags, lit from below in a vibrant orange. All this against a backdrop of old, forrest clad mountains sprinkled in snow. Once again i find myself, phone in hand, my fingers tapping out a description, for no other reason then my mind putting … Read the rest

Högåsen 10:48 am

The orange globe of the sun hangs low in the december sky, barely reaching above the mountain range in the east. It spreads its amber rays over the white snow causing everything to sparkle with joy.  The air feels crisp and cool against my skin as I speed down the slope in long, sweeping turns, cutting a smooth, clear path through the corduroy surface. This is one of those moments when everything just comes together and it is, in a word, perfect. I live for moments like this!… Read the rest

Lift in Åre 10:49 am

There is a piercing pain below my knee and a numbing pain in my elbow every time I move my right arm. The weather is generally overcast and a bit windy and it’s hard to see clearly. All of that is of no consequence: it is my first day in the snow since april and it feels good to be back.… Read the rest

South western Sweden 3:23 pm

The train is thundering through the kind of  landscape that seems typical of the un-forrested parts of northern europe: open plains, groves of trees and small hillocks on the horizon. Everything is covered in a thin layer of snow, the black trunks of trees sticking out against the white. The thin pink streaks against the pale blue sky alert me to setting of the sun and despite the heater being set to Death Valley mode, I lean closer to the window and cringe my neck to look behind me. The western sky is brightly lit in that pinkish orange tone … Read the rest

My appartment 1:44 pm

I’m lying curled up in a little ball on the cold, hard bathroom floor. This position seems to be the only way to keep the nausea at bay; the toilet bowl is only inches away, just in case I need to throw up, all I have to do is raise my head. This is the worst hangover I had since, well I can’t remember the last time I felt this bad, it was probably some time in the beginning of the year so at least six months ago. Here, in a fetal position on the floor, I remember exactly what … Read the rest

Chalmers tvärgata 10:29 pm

It is the first clear night in days, maybe even weeks. The sky is a deep blue, as close to black as possible with a few bright stars here and there. Above me is a plume of white smoke, clear against the sky, rising with a soft woosh from a nearby smokestack. The smoke flows in front of the full moon which shines through, creating a yellowish halo with orange edges. The picture is framed by the roofline of a house at a strange angle on one side, and the barren branches of a tree  on the other. As for … Read the rest

Utlandagatan 0:45 am

The fog lies thick over the city, dampening sounds and blurring shapes. In front of me stands a tree, spreading its dark green branches across a background of boring buildings. A street light is shielded by the foliage, leaves turning a vivid gold within the sphere of its glare; the rays forming cones of light through the fog, like search lights. Taking a few steps makes the cones shift as if following me then disappear altogether as I continue home.… Read the rest

Rut på Skäret, 11:46 pm

M.I.A – take your money is pumping in the red and green light behind me. In front of me is compact darkness, no, not completely compact, an uneven line dividing the trees from the sky is discernible in the distance. The cold night air embraces me with chilly claws but I remain standing. The clomping of high healed shoes has joined the beat of the music and amidst all the revelers is a girl in an expensive dress and a guy in a nice suit. They are bobbing up and down with the rest in general ecstasy. The man is … Read the rest

Ullared ~1 pm to ~ 3 pm

DEODORANT! Piles of deodorant, the staff havent even bothered to put them on shelves. All around are all kinds of cosmetics in all colours, types and sizes. A few steps away are rugged outdoor clothes, winter jackets and rain pants and on the other side, underwear and t-shirts. Moving on to lighter clothes, jeans, shirts, sweatshirts and even suits. Simple white signs with text over the clothes racks proclaim the low prices 199, 149 and finally 599 for a suit.

The central aisle is full of people, a slow trickle of shopping carts laden with everything from food to clothes, … Read the rest

Linna Hall 2:39 pm

We are exploring a big, hulking soviet relic of some kind, an immense concrete structure, built in several tiers, wide staircases leading up to and over the roof. A plaque tells us that this is Linna hall, a concert hall, built in the 80,s but the shape makes it look more like a modern fortress. It has been badly run down over the decades, broken tiles and concrete blocks everywhere and many of the sides are now covered in colourful graffiti in contrast to the all-pervading grey of the concrete. The place has been closed down completely, steel gratings barring the way, … Read the rest
